gpa v. sats

did my gpa ruin my chances? my school calculates gpa on a 4.5 scale, so im not sure how it translates, but it is a b+ average in all honors and ap classes (the most challenging classes my school offers) but i'm only in the second decile. i got a 2220 on the sats and 700's on 2 satiis, but now im worried (after a few rejections from elite non-ivies) that i wont get in to any of the other schools i applied to. so i was wondering, do you think the ivies even read my applications? or did they see my gpa and throw it out. im sorry if this sounds obnoxious, but im just really nervous now.

You know nothing about admissions if you think they saw your GPA and threw out your application.

They’ll definitely read your entire application. Your GPA is only one part of the application, they’ll be evaluated in the context of the rest of your application (essays, SATs, letters of recommendation…etc).

I agree, Smile614, but GPA is probably the most important aspect. It represents thousands of hours of work put into two dozen courses. That reflects your intelligence and work ethic more than an SAT score.

I do agree that GPA is important but I think the transcript itself is more important just because it reflects what classes you have been taking in high school. The transcript can also show a trend in grades that you couldn’t tell just by looking at the GPA.

Obviously someone taking just all regular classes can easily pull of a 4.0 UW GPA but that may be much harder if someone is taking all AP classes…
I guess weighted GPA is more useful in that context. Either way, they won’t throw out your application just because of a low GPA (unless it’s like a 1.0 or something hahah). Some people come from extremely competitive schools where a 3.5 might be impressive. Or if someone got sick all of junior year. They’ll take all that into consideration.
