GPA vs. Individual Class Grades

Hello, I was wondering if an individual class grade will have a huge affect on the decision of colleges? I understand that the GPA is extremely important. However, I've noticed that many people here do not post their grades when asking others to evaluate them.

Anyways, I recieved a C in AP Chemistry for the first semester, and am still in the first half of the second semester. Do you think this will have an impact on my chances at universities? During the first semester, my AP Chemistry teacher left us without warning. We now have a replacement substitute which really effected my grade in the class.

Stats: Sophomore, Asian, California.

Plenty of ECs: Tennis Club, Engineering Club, Environmental Science Club, Interact, FBLA, Speech, recently accepted to the LEAD program (A leadership program created by Assembly Member Judy Chu), and I plan to have at least 500 hours of volunteering at a local hospital.

What do you think my chances are at UCLA, USC, UCB, and UCI if I recieve at least a 3.8 unweighted GPA and score at least a 2000 on the new SAT?

I don't think that one C will hurt you all that much, especially if you bring it up before the end of the year.

man..if ur C was in freshman year, that C will be covered up. since its soph..its might have an effect on ur chances.

How selective is Vanderbilt? I've heard some wonderful things about their business program. Also, it seems like a great college, but it has a 40% acceptance rate? The acceptance rate seems kind of ackward. Do I have a chance? Btw, I'm the original poster who recieved a C in AP Chemistry. =/

The 40% acceptance rate is because of the low actual-entrance rate. It's very difficult when you're competing in a pool of very top-notch schools to grab a hold of applicants who will actually enter the school.

As far as the C in AP Chemistry, don't worry -- I got a C in AP Environmental, AP Bio, and Algebra 2. I still got in Vandy as an early-write. (And I'm Asian, 1360 SAT. 10/724 class rank)

P.S.: It's affected, not effected. =)
