I'm a high school junior now, with a GPA around 3.5, which I know isn't great, but I've taken the SAT and gotten a 1710, I do plan on taking it again, hoping to get an 1850 which seems fairly reasonable.
what are my chances of getting into a good college? I want to get into NYU, but there's a long list of schools I'd love to attend. Please just give me an idea of where to set my expectations.

The first thing you shoud do is look at the cost of the schools in which you are interested. NYU will cost $60K/year. Will your parents pay that? Ask them. Then look at the Common Data Sets for each school, section C. C7 gives the factors that are used in admission, C9 shows the stats of admitted and entering students.

Erin’s Dad is right on target. Common Data Sets, and finances. Those are your first places to look. If you think NYU may be a reach for either factor, you might post on their forum and ask what other schools current students considered to see if any of them seem interesting.
