Hello everybody,
I just had a question regarding Yale’s GPA standards. I am currently a junior, and am in danger of getting a B in BC calculus. I was wondering whether or not this would absolutely destroy any chance I ever had of getting in. (Please no “God forbid that you get a B”)
Thanks!!
Also, this B would be for the third quarter. There is a chance that I could raise the semester grade to an A in the fourth quarter.
It won’t “absolutely destroy any chance [you] ever had of getting in.” However, do note that there are probably thousands of applicants who have consistent straight A’s.
But if I get one B, would it significantly reduce my chances? Or do you think that they would see that I have straight A’s in everything else and kinda give me the benefit of the doubt? This is probably a pretty stupid question now that I think about it…
My son was accepted with a B. He did have offsetting virtues, but a B is not the kiss of death.
Ok thanks!! I feel better now
Do the best you can in the class. With single-digit acceptance rates, it’s unfortunately odds against for acceptance. But, be assured that if you’re a viable candidate for Yale, you will get into a great school whether or not you get into Yale.
Whether you get accepted/rejected/waitlisted by Yale will not be as a result of getting 1 B
Thank you all! I really appreciate it. I’ve been stressing out a tremendous amount over it. Not necessarily for Yale, but for colleges in general. I know it is one of the most selective schools in the country, and I just wanted to know how big of an impact on my decision it would have. Thanks again guys!!

It’s for Princeton, but probably mirrors Yale pretty well.
Acceptance rate for 4.0 students: 9.9%
Acceptance rate for 3.9-3.99 students: 9.8%
Virtually indistinguishable. As long as your grades are at a higher than 3.9 GPA unweighted, you should be okay.
^^ and I know at least one student, DS, who if memory serves was accepted with a 3.85 UW.
Your quarter grades are irrelevant – thus, you still can avoid any dip if you improve for your end of semester grade.
Ok. Thanks!
