Hello guys.
I am having a little bit of anxiety with this college process…
My GPA just updated to a 3.81 UW on a 4.0 scale and a 5.0W.
I am in the top 10%, more specifically top 6% of my school…
I have taken 11 APs and even some dual-enrollment classes. Is that good enough for the Ivies, UChicago, etc?
Your GPA/rank is just one data point. Yours keeps you in contention- but that’s it, and that’s all any GPA- even a 4.0- can do. Your 11 APs / dual-enrollment classes are also a data point, but a secondary one- assuming you did well in them, it speaks to rigor but not much else. You haven’t said anything about SAT/ACT, which is another important data point, much less anything about who you are beyond your GPA- which is a crucial element.
Top 6% is generally academically competitive. You will need top SAT/ACT and SAT 2 scores to back up your academic credentials.
Grades are only one of many factors in the admissions process for top school.
What collegemom3717 said is correct, but on top of that your GPA isn’t really a dealbreaker at all. Your course work seems really rigorous and you did very well. It’s the other parts of your application that now matter.
@collegemom3717 @chicago107 thank you both for your input. I was just asking in terms of GPA because some have asserted that this GPA is low…? But perhaps those are just CC standards?
To clarify: I just want to know if this GPA is up to par with competitive schools’ standards.
My kid got into UChicago EA a couple of years ago with a 3.7 UW GPA. Unhooked, but great test scores and clearly the UChicago intellectual type.
I’d guess its within the middle 50% but I’m not really sure. The people who would say that’s low are exaggerating a bit. You’re not top 6% for nothing.
