I have a 3.87 GPA (95.5 percentile) right now as a junior and will MOST LIKELY end senior year with a 3.89 or 3.9 (if I work really hard). I got a 34 on the ACT. My dream school is Duke but I used Naviance and it said that the people who got in from my school have an average of a 3.91 GPA and 33 ACT. I am not 100% sure if I can raise my grade to a 3.89/3.9. If I stay at a 3.87 or 3.88 GPA, are my chances slim of getting in? My extracurriculars are pretty creative in the sense that my whole application is based around Latin, Greek & Sanskrit studies. Thank you so much for your help
.02-.03 less on your GPA will NOT be the deciding factor in your admission. Of course, GPA matters, but that small of a difference shouldn’t impact your result.
Focus on doing what you like to do (extracurriculars, etc.): show Duke and other colleges you have a passion for something and that you’ve acted on this interest.
@anonpenn2022 thanks so much! but what if my gpa is .04 below the average?
@hockeygirl77 It’s all subjective, but these are tiny differences we’re talking about. Think about what you’re saying. You’re essentially saying that if you have a GPA of 3.87, they’ll look negatively upon you, but if you can get that one extra A rather than an A- to boost it to a 3.9ish, you will have infinitely better chances of getting in?
Remember, you’re basing your expectations off of past admittances from your school: these individuals didn’t only have their strong academic record to help them.
My advice is to continue working hard in school, and if your GPA stays at a 3.87-3.88, don’t sweat it. 3.87 and 3.91 is really not a huge jump at all. Focus on building your resume with your unique extracurriculars, and begin writing your essays over this summer.
