I am a sophomore in Mechanical Engineering at U of Illinois Urbana. My gpa is a 3.1, and I was wondering if that sucks. IWhat is a good gpa if I want to get into a top 10 masters program?

you need at least a 3.5 or greater. my friend is an electrical engineer at UCSD and had a 3.3, and its hard for her to get into a graduate school.

Being at U of I is helpful. But I do think that gpa is a bit low. Work to try and get it up a little bit. Typically grad schools are looking for a 3.5 or greater.

What if I have amazing letters of rec. and some research? I already know I can get great letters, Im working on the research

Seconding what Dr Reynolds said. UCSD's a little different from UIUC, seeing as how UIUC has a reputation as being a powerhouse of the engineering schools and you're liable to get recs from professors who are the best in the field (by the way... befriend your professors!!), but definitely shoot for that 3.5.

Edit: OK, you've got good recs and research... The recommendations are great, and they'll help a lot. Research experience is nice, too. Still would be a good idea to try and up your GPA to a 3.5, if you can.

Cool thanks for your help
