GPA stands for Grade Point Average. Basically, in the US grades are given like A, B and so on. Each grade is assigned a specific number. Normally A=4.0 B=3.0 etc. For more advanced courses like honors or Advanced Placement, grades are weighted meaning if you take more of them your "weighted" GPA goes up. Each school has its own method of weighting but generally A=5.0 B=4.0 etc. Percentages can be roughly converted into GPAs depending on the school's method of conversion. Hope that wasn't too verbose and convoluted.

so when you apply for college, do they look at you weighted or unweighted GPA?

both................

But you have to remember that these things are calculated differently depending on the highschool. Due to grade inflation in the states, it's quite normal to have many students with 90's. Whereas at my canadian highschool anything above an 80% is considered an A and a 4.0 average. So these things need to be taken into consideration.

Do U.S. universities take that into account and count the 80's as 90's?

Most do yes, as long as your guidance counsellor states so in their secondary school report or on your transcript. On my transcript it said 'gpa - 4.0' and my counsellor also filled this in on my school reports.

what about Chinese studs?
sometimes the total score of one paper is 150
and I switched it to one based on 100
like 135 in 150 paralles 90 in 100. is that ok?

and do u think above 80% of 150 could be estimated as gpa 4.0?
