My daughter is in 7th grade and taking 9th grade Algebra I...she is struggling, but passing. She has a low B in it right now...She is worried that if she ends up with a C in Alg 1, that it will ruin her chances of having a good GPA in high school....3.5 or higher....can anyone help me ease her mind and let her know that ONE C is not going to hurt her whole entire high school academic record??? She's in 7th grade for goodness sake! She's putting too much stress on herself...I'm so glad she's so motivated and dedicated, but i don't want her to stress so much either! I'm proud of her regardless!!! She has put forth 150% effort!!! She's a go-getter! Please help me ease her mind...maybe if she reads it from others, she'll feel better about it..

i did that. i don't no how ur school system works but my high school doesn't take into consideration any class taken not in year 9-12. so my algebra class didn't count. this guy i know took ap econ in 8th grade and that didn't even count. so tell her not to stress about it. and if that doesn't calm her, tell her i got into umich, brandeis, and washu, with more than one B in math...and other classes.

Our hs only counts grades earned in 9 - 12 regardless of what classes you took in middle school. For that matter, even if a middle school grade were to show up on a hs transcript, I don't think most colleges would count it. Plus, a 7th grader taking Algebra is working 1-2 years ahead of grade level, which is impressive!

Bigger picture... if your 7th grader is already freaking out about GPA for college you may have a bigger problem here. High School is about a lot of things, getting into a top college is just ONE of them. You may want to have a talk about the fact that there are many good colleges out there, and if she does reasonably well with a reasonably challenging courseload she will get into most of them. It's WAY too early to be worrying about GPA and college admissions!

The thing to focus on is why is she doing poorly and what needs to be done to get that understood and corrected. Beyond working ahead of grade level, is there some systemic issue that needs to be addressed. Better to face that now as Math courses just get more difficult as you go forward and you don't want the frustration level to go up.

I agree with all the comments of when GPA counts and for a 7th grader to not put undue pressure on herself. Have you talked with the math teacher or had a three way to discuss what is going on? HS and middle school teachers are very willing to have those conversations. I wouldn't elaborate on anything negative, but rather what do we need to do here to improve, the root cause should come out as part of that discussion.

it really is waayyy too early to be worrying about that. but if it eases her mind i got almost a c in algebra 1 in 8th grade, and since then have gotten an a in math every year & have a 4.0 gpa, so it wont matter.

Algebra and Geometry counted 100% on my hs transcript, as well as French I. If only I'd believed the people who told me then that Bs really would hurt me when applying to college...

But the C will average in and she'll live. As long as other HS grades are good I doubt colleges will put too much emphasis on one C in middle schoool

She's in 7th grade aand already worrying about college? I took Algebra I in 8th grade and it was included on my transcript, but I don't think that my grade from that class was factored into my High School GPA. However, GPA isn't the only factor that matters when applying to colleges. In my high school career I got an F in a science class and a D in a math class (my lowest grades), and I was still accepted to my top choice (Bowdoin). There is more to me than my GPA...I volunteered, had a job, had several ECs, etc. (plus I like to think that I wrote a great essay and had awesome recs). The point is that a C won't be completely detrimental. If she is really worried, get her involved in volunteering or something else that she can continue on through high school.

I taught 7th grade honors pre-algebra and you had to get an A or B to continue on to Alg I, taught by an extremely tough, but excellent, teacher. There were 2 students who had B averages but they just didn't understand mathematical concepts. They would memorize how to do problems for the tests, which would result in good grades, but then ask them basic math principles and they would have no clue. I explained this to their parents and recommended that they not stay in the math honors program. They took my advice and did well in the slower paced classes. If she's not doing as well in Alg I, talk to the teacher to see why first. As said before, math builds on itself and you need a good foundation and understanding before moving on to higher level courses.

I took algebra I in 7th grade as well. I got a B first semester and a C second semester. In 8th grade I proceeded to Geometry and got the same-- a B first semester and a C second semester. I was able to get 2 B's in Algebra II, an A in Trigonometry, an A in Pre-Calc and 2 A's in AP Calculus. Honestly, she has nothing to worry about. I maintained a 3.8 GPA throughout high school taking 7 AP's and got a 2030 on my SAT and have gotten into SMU, UCSB, and NC State so far. I haven't heard from UCLA, USC, Vanderbilt or UNC-Chapel Hill yet, but I have hope. Tell her she's stressing too much and that she'll be fine. You can virtually fail middle school and so long as you dominate in high school, you'll be fine. Heck, colleges don't even LOOK at your middle school grades!

I took Algerbra in 7th, i got a C- and a C. Actually, through 7th and 8th grade, i got 5 As (4 were art or music classes), 9 Bs, and like 11 Cs and 2 Ds. I faked sick a ton b/c school bored me. The fact that I got C's played no role in my knowlege of the subject (i have gotten A's in every math class since Jr. High). It has had absolutely no repurcissions on me in High School (I have the stats to get me into most top teir schools). I wouldn't recomend skipping or slacking off to anyone (if i hadn't i'd be in Pre-Calc this year instead of FuncStatTrigAdvancedgeo), but the point is that it doesn't really matter. No college looks before 9th grade (some don't even look at that). Essentially, she shouldn't be stressed out at all. In fact, if I were to guess, she is going to be a work-a-holic unless she lightens up. A 7th grader shouldn't even be thinking about GPA's right now (i didn't even realize what they were when i was her age.

I guess that was a tangent, but the point is, it doesn't matter b/c no one will ever see that score again. EVER.

THE TRUTH is that, once your daughter gets into high school the highschool counceilers will explain in great detail, to her that once she becomes a senior(12th grade) she will have a chance to cancel her highschool credit scores she took in middle school.

they will explain this, but this is only possible if she continues to take math course all through high school.

FOR EXAMPLE<
i got a B is French 1.
i took french 2,3,4,5
i chose to cancel the B i got. this is good.

ANOTHER ONE>>> dont stress over there grade, dont care what they do, i hate parents who are parenoid, they are soo not cool, don't say anything to your child just think it to urself, you oviously cant handle the pressure, that is G4Y.
take my advice or say F it
