do i have a chance?

How does UF calculate your GPA...

I'm in FL, and according to virtual counselor my weighted is 4.1 unweighted is 3.4 academic core is 3.6

????

do i have a chance?

i mean, if you ask "Do I have a chance?" I would say, yes. Even if you ask me if you have a chance applying to Harvard , I would say yes, but that chance would be like 0.00000001%

Your weighted GPA is ok, but your unweighted I would think is a little bit low, but it doesn't really mean anything. UF don't just look at your GPA and say .. hey you have high GPA , get in! You have to consider other factors as well such as your SATs ACTs as well as your EC . Your essay also plays a major role. Whatever you are taking your senior year and whatever grades you are making in your senior year is also an important factor.

So if you think about applying to UF, take a lot of AP courses instead of taking courses like Gym, or Food Prep during your senior year.

Join lots of clubs if you haven't already done so and play sports if possible.

UF likes well-rounded students. I mean if you are an IB student or Nation Merit Scholar, you're more likely to be accepted at UF.

National Merit commended? that good?

UF uses a weighting system that is closest to your academic core. On that scale, your GPA is LOW for UF. Of course, if your SAT's are over 1400 (math/CR) then your GPA would be fine.
The way UF calculates your GPA is using only academic courses (math, social studies, sciences, English, and Foreign Language). It gets rid of pluses and minuses. So, any A is a 4.0, B is a 3.0, C is a 2.0 etc. Then UF gives you extra points for AP/IB (1 full point) and honors (.5 point).
So for instance, a B+, B or B- in honors Biology is a 3.5 (3.0 plus .5 for honors). An A in AP world history is 5.0 (4.0 plus 1 point for AP). Your virtual counselor weighted GPA includes non academic classes and is not used for the Florida state schools calculations. It is the academic core that is closest but you should calibrate it yourself including all the academic courses that you have taken.

My 3.6 is low?

You have to be sh***ting me? I'm in-state if that helps....

University of Florida - Admissions

Check out the 2008 stats for freshman who were admitted.

It is a little low, allright. The expectation is that you will have taken several honors and ap courses what would boost your gpa (since they add 0.5 and 1.0 to the grade you receive, respectively). This is compounded by the fact that UF seems to place a high emphasis on gpa.

I wouldn't worry if you have a lot of AP classes under your transcript. I got in with somewhere around a 3.66 unweighted gpa. Of course, competition might be a little higher the next few years due to cutting down number of admissions and all.

yup .. less students will be admitted and UF will become more selective . I got in UF with 3.89 unweighted GPA, but I think my weighted for UF is probably 4.0+ since I took a total of 10 AP classes and pretty much everything else was honors. The essay is really important! I have a friend who doesn't have neither high GPA nor high SAT scores , but she still got in because her essay was really good.

Put it this way. Right now, for it's AA transfer students,my 3.8 isn't looking good. And that's with an AA! Talk about rediculous standards for state school with only decent business rankings.

hey, seiclan,

do they count all ap classes in the "core" for GPA calculation, i.e, art history ... stuff like that? or only AP clases for english, science, etc.

zebes

I believe that they count all the academic classes for the Florida GPA but you should call admissions and check.
