Gpa???

I visit this website pretty often, so I thought I'd post the following question:
What is the GPA, that gets sent to universities, based on? i.e. the average of everything done since grade 9 through 11 or just the average of the courses taken in gr 11 only?

Also, when sending class rank, again, is the rank based on everything done since gr 9 through 11 or just in gr 11?

thanks in advance.
Please don't remove this thread.

wrong forum

I know, but this is the forum that I visit the most often. I didn’t know where else to go.

Umm I think it’s all since grade 9.
But some colleges probably put more weight on classes such as math and science than classes such as gym and music. Some colleges don’t count 9th grade grades I think

I think

It depends on the school. Some look at every grade, some look at 10th and 11th and 1st semester of senior year… etc.

Another question i have is I took a couple of gr 11 and gr 12 courses in gr 10. Will they negpect the gr 12 courses that i took

GPA is based on mainly your 9th-11th grade classes although on the transcript that your school will be sending the colleges, there will also be your senior year classes (they will get a sense of how much you are challenging yourself). If you get waitlisted or deferred, you will likely be sending at least 1 term worth of senior year grades. So don’t slack off in your senior year! It can make a huge difference!

Oh, in reply to your second question, if you took 11th/12th grade level classes earlier, of course they count! Anything that is a grade on a transcript (which you can request from the school that you currently attend I believe) will be factored into your GPA.

Every high school handles the GPA differently.

Most start with a percentage or percentile then change that into a grade scale (and schools are VERY different in this!..annoying!!..I had to get a 95 to get an A…but I know people who get an A with a 90!!), then they change that grade scale into a “GPA”, and they even have different scales for that! THEN…the schools each have their own “weighting system” for advanced classes. Some weight honors, some only A/P classes. Some have different weights for each, others use the same figure. Some weight the class ONLY if you take the A/P exam…etc. Some don’t weight at all. Some report only unweighted grades, some weighted, some both.

I believe nearly all schools will send your ENTIRE high school transcript (then you’ll send the first half of your 12th year in to the college before they reach their decision). So your college will see ALL the classes you’ve taken or will take. Anyway, you hope your school sends to your college a very detailed “perspectus”…and that they bother to use it. Because that is the only way they can compare apples to apples. And THAT is when “class rank” becomes important. Especially in a bigger school where you can really tell how the student stacks up to their peers.

But…then each COLLEGE also uses the numbers differently. It gets even MORE complicated. So THAT is why the SAT/ACT scores are so important. They can separate the chaff from the wheat. Because then at least one is compared “nationally” (or even internationally").

Because College A might start with your raw transcript and drop off your freshman year’s grades. College B might take out all your “non-academic” grades because they don’t care how you did in Physical Ed unless you want to major in PE. Many schools will strip off any weighting and perform their own. They might even take your ABC grades and recalculate them to the school’s own GPA schedule. That is how they normalize the GPAs. Otherwise…it’s all just a crapshoot.

So…don’t “worry your pretty little head about it”. Just do your best, send them in, pray or hope…and good luck to ya.
