<p>So what are the actual GPA facts? My D says first year counts toward everything but Latin Honors but I believe I have heard the opposite here?</p>

<p>I’m an alum, too. First-year GPA doesn’t count for Latin Honors, but any classes you take for the distribution do count.</p>

<p>Other classes that count toward your Latin Honors GPA are classes taken at the other Five Colleges and those from Smith’s own study abroad programs.</p>

<p>Yes, borgin (who is very knowledgable) has the story. First year grades and study abroad grades earned at non-Smith programs count towards your overall GPA but not towards the GPA that is used to calculate Latin Honors. I believe they still count towards Phi Beta Kappa though. </p>

<p>And yes, borgin was referring to the Latin Honors distribution, which is the only distribution requirment at Smith. In order to qualify for Latin Honors you need to not only have the correct GPA, but you also need to have taken at least one class in each of the areas of knowledge (there are seven of them…? You can look it up on the website). Any class you take, during first year, during JYA, at another college, can count towards the distribution even if the grade from that class doesn’t count.</p>

<p>Roughly 25% of each graduation class graduates with Latin Honors.</p>

<p>A quibble, which may be a result of year-to-year variance: in 2008, exactly 20 percent had Latin Honors. It was roughly 1.5 percent summa cum laude, 4.5 magna cum laude, 14 percent cum laude. Not that there’s anything wrong about being obsessive about this. </p>
