I have seen so many hyper inflated weighted GPA's on this board. One question I have for everyone is how do the private LAC's & Ivy's really look at these. My daughters high school stopped weighting any honors classes (starting with her graduating class). We are in CA, and all the UC's only weight class that are AP's - and only 8 grades at that (basically - they have there own list, but honors classes are not weighted). So my daughter who has taken every honors english & math class since 7th grade get's no weighting on her GPA. Only her AP's count. She has a great GPA with just those, but when you read all these 4.7 GPA's she can't compete. She has a 4.34 with just the AP's weighted and that's pretty good given she has only taken 5 classes.

So with all that said. How do the colleges put everyone on an even keel. Do they take her transcripts and weight the honors to get her on par, or do they do nothing?

thanks

I'm pretty sure colleges don't look at weighted GPA as much as: a) rigor of curriculum, and b) unweighted GPA. My school, for example, doesn't weight GPAs at all, but our counselors indicate the rigor of our schedule so colleges know the difference between a 4.0 in easy classes and a 4.0 in AP/Honors.

I agree with what highopes says. I'm sure they know the difference, between someone with a 4.34 at your Daughter's school, and someone with a 4.34 at mine (my school adds plenty of weighting to honors and AP classes, the people who make lots of B's and C's in honors and AP classes are the people who make that low of a GPA at my school). I'm sure they know that other schools have different GPA weights, and they look at the unweighted GPA more.

Lol, my GPA is over 6.0.. It just depends on your school district, but I have also taken over 17 AP's. No, colleges don't look at the weighted as much, but the adcom in charge of your area should know how they are calculated.

Poisonous, I wish I could have taken that many AP's :( I've only taken two so far, but the most possible at my school are twelve.

How do you get a 6 on a 4point scale with only 1 point more for AP's.

^ My school only offers 2 AP's so you should both count yourselves as lucky.

they look at weighted gpas in the context of the school. adcoms aren't idiots, they realize different schools weight differently.

my school offers zero APs, so everyone's gonna think I go to some slacker school

My kids high school offers few APs, no honors, does not weight any classes. The highest GPA any student can get is a 4.0 and they usually graduate a dozen students a year with that GPA. The school also sends students to highly rated colleges every year.
