GPAs recalculated

Do you know if the GPAs are recalculated by AFA admissions?

The reason I ask is that my son’s school does not weight honors, Pre-IB, or Pre-AICE classes. Only AP, IB and AICE are given any weight and are only offered to Upperclassmen. AICE for those who don’t know is the British A-level exams.

The grading scale here in NO.VA is quite different than it was in Florida. Here 100-93 A, vs 100-90 A, in Florida. The killer is a C+ for an 83. Most college do recalculate the GPAs to level the out the differences.

Also do they give special consideration if a student is in a IB or AICE programs. These programs are know to be much harder than the average high school fare.

Last thing Doc…I don’t think that other thing should change what you do here. You are an advocate for USAFA.

Most colleges look at a student's transcript in twin context-meaning not only do they compare to other applicants, but also in relation to students in the same school (that is why class rank is often more important than gpa). Colleges have a profile of each school and are able to determine the level of difficulty. Also, depending upon the grade your son was in when you moved, oftentimes a school will afford the student who is entering a new school district as a senior, the option of not having his/her gpa re-calculated but rather sending two transcripts. The only drawback to this option is that the student is then not usually eligible for awards and scholarships upon graduation. And lastly, standardized tests (SAT, ACT) are very important. I'm quite sure docfrance could add quite a bit of insight.

At summer seminar, they explained that they would re-calculate our GPA's for us, and that they take into factor the difficulty of your course load.

I'm just not sure how the recalculating/normalizing of gpas is done by USAFA, sorry. Yes, I'm aware of the NoVA grading system--my kids went through it in Fairfax County. But, with homework and grade inflation, an enormous amount of kids still get 4.0s (not my kids, though, by a long shot!)
