I'm probably going to apply for both Grad Programs, but I would be grateful if somebody could give me some more info about these 2 J-Schools (I know it is the first year that NYU has a Journalism Institute, so it's not exactly a J-school, but more or less...).
I'm an international student and had always considered Columbia as THE school of Journalism, but I've been checking the Master programs at NYU and I must admit that I found them really attractive... What do you think? Is the difference between NYU and Columbia in Journalism so big as in many other fields? I got the feeling programs at NYU are somehow more specialized and... let's say they have a "fresher perspective". I liked that many Professors there still write for the most important magazines at the same time as they're teaching (but probably it's the same in Columbia...).
I'm quite sure about taking a Magazine Writing specialization, either at Columbia or at NYU, but what is your apinion? Which one would you recommend me?

i honestly can't think of an academic preface where NYU would win over Columbia. The value of the ivy name isn't really relevant to education but REALLY kicks in in the job market. And seeing as journalism is a dying (or at least drastically changing) craft you're definitely gonna want that sparkle.

Columbia's journalism school is, along with Northwestern's Medill and a few others, in the top handful of J-schools in the country. NYU's, as far as I am aware, isn't. That makes a difference not only in the academics (which I can't comment on), but also in the networking opportunities, which like an MBA are one of the primary value-adds for J-school. Success in a career in Journalism is not just about your skills but also your connections, and Columbia helps considerably with those.

Plus, they're the ones who give out the Pulitzer Prize, which is kind of cool.
