Grad/Professional School

I'm currently double majoring in Biology and Studio Arts with a minor in Anthropology and because of this I have to take courses over the summer. Chem I & II/French I & II this summer and Calc I & II next summer. Here's my problem: I heard that graduate schools and medical schools, etc. look at these classes and they take into consideration the fact that you took them over the summer months. Obviously, some students take these classes to avoid recking their GPA ... the universities being keenly aware of this. Does anyone know, if I apply to graduate school will they more-likely-than-not ask for my letter grades from the university I'm taking summer courses at or will they just look at my college transcript, accepting the fact I received credit from my undergrad college? If someone could lead me in the right direction I'd be very grateful. Thanks. ^-^

We will want all of your transcripts, from every institution in which you've taken courses, whether you've taken them during the regular school year, or during the summer. Period.

And I don't know what you've heard about summer courses somehow helping "to avoid wrecking GPA," but summer course grades still factor into one's GPA.

Professor X, many premed students are told to avoid taking courses over the summer, both because many students tend to take these courses at local community colleges (and thus the courses are perceived as less rigorous) and because students tend to take a lighter courseload over the summer (and thus have more time to study for the summer courses).

Selene, taking courses over the summer will have less of an impact on graduate school admissions than on medical school admissions, simply because medical schools tend to place a higher emphasis on GPA than graduate schools do in the first place.

The only way this could really hurt you in graduate school admissions would be if your summer classes interfered with your ability to do research (if you're thinking of graduate school in biology).

Ah, med school! Thank you for the clarification, molliebatmit. :)

Alright. That clarifies things. Thanks so much.

I took some classes at local college during high school, do grad school want transcript from that college too?
