Grad School Acceptance (especially abroad)

I'm hoping to get a doctorate, and I know that Grinnell has a great rack record for a lot of future doctoral students. I am, however, hoping to go abroad, probably to the UK or France. If not there, I'd like to go to the Ivy Leauge, Berkley, Michigan, etc. How hard is it for students from Grinnell to get into these schools? Does the lack of grade inflation hurt acceptance rates? Because of Grinnell's geographic isolation, are top schools unlikely to have heard of Grinnell, especially overseas?

Come on guys, 71 views and no responses? Just tell me about Grad schools Grinnellians go to!

I’m guessing that the hesitation is with reference to the last part of your question. Grinnell is well known and well respected by the graduate programs at all the top schools in the US. And no one knows exactly how the lack of grade inflation impacts the acceptance rate at these schools: There’s no control group here and too many variables to just assume someone didn’t get in somewhere just because of the lack of grade inflation.

How well is Grinnell known at grad schools internationally? I’m guessing that it isn’t. None of the LACs are well known internationally. Because the LACs have no graduate schools, there is little or no buzz about them among the previous generation of students who came to the US only for grad school. The recent influx of internationals into LACs as undergrads hasn’t resulted in the reputation of LACs filtering back to grad schools in their own countries yet. If that’s a concern for you, then indeed you could attend a school that has well known graduate programs for your undergraduate degree and bask in the reflected glory-but it’s an entirely different educational experience than attending a LAC.

I don’t know how to answer this either. I think it’s something you could ask admissions about. Surely they would be able to give you some idea about this and it’s a perfectly reasonable question to ask them.

Thanks guys. I get that this is a subject most people aren’t going to know about–I figured I’d ask just in case.

We just visited there and they told us that they have a very high acceptance rate into med school, law and others. They have a broad cross section of schools that their students get into. They have many students that have gotten in to the top 10 med, law and business programs. I would call them. From what I have heard, colleges know which schools have grade inflation and account accordingly.

Grinnell is in the top 1% of schools that has students that go onto to get doctorate degrees.

Grinnell grads regularly get into Ivy league graduate and professional schools (or whatever the top school happens to be for a specific field). Recent Grinnellians have also been Rhodes Scholars and remember that Grinnell does have a presence in London, so I’m sure that the Oxbridge schools and London schools would recognize Grinnell.

You can check out the grad schools that the class of '08 attended. Surprisingly Berkeley wasn’t on the list but I have come upon several of the graduates from one Grinnell major who ended up in Berkeley. Plus, I don’t think this report includes the number of graduates who deferred (Peace Corps, Grinnell Corps, etc.), which I believe is a fairly popular option here. Oh, a couple of UK schools are in there too.

mcpheevn, that is really interesting information on the link you posted. Does anyone know whether most LACs prepare and post a similar report?

I’m a Grinnell grad. I go to Michigan. There are lots of us Grinnellians here in Ann Arbor.
