GRAD SCHOOL ...BC vs BU

I am trying to stay out of my daughter’s decison process for Grad School but she is honestly at the same point she has been for the past month…CANNOT MAKE A DECISION.

She is graduating this year from UMIAMI in Coral Gables with a degree in Elem Ed/ Psych, passed her FLA teaching exams and will be certified after graduating. BUT she doesn’t want to stay in Florida. She has registered to take the MTELS and applied to 5 schools in New England, 4 in Boston…accepted at all and now it is crunch time. She is between BC and BU.

Unfortunately she is in the midst of her full time practicum and cannot attend either accepted student day but did meet with an advisor at BU and a dean at BC last week when she was home for Easter.

BU was VERY helpful…waiving several courses and has been in constant contact with her. BC doesn’t assign an advisor until you accept and trying to get specific info for her has been like pulling teeth.

She liked both campuses. loves Boston and the only plus she gives to BC is the Sports (which she LOVES about UM). I have tried to explain to her that it is different in grad school which she understands…but there is still the draw. She gets that there is the Patriots and Sox…still.

Her older sister attended BC undergrad and moved to the 5 year program and got her master’s in spec ed and has a great job in the Boston area. I can attribute that success partially to BC, partially to her interviews and finally to luck :). She of course feels BC is the better school.

Any comments or advice would be most appreciated.

I personally think BC’s best attribute, when compared to BU, is their campus. More than just a physical difference, it also creates a different learning environment. I’ve read several accounts that say BC provides a tighter-knit student body because they have a comfortable place to hang out, study, socialize, and get to know each other. BU, on the other hand, is known for their students dissolving into the city after class, leading to a somewhat detached atmosphere.

Additionally, if your daughter is showing interest in sports, I also recommend BC. The Eagles have a great fanbase and reputation.

Hope this helps your daughter a little to make up her mind!
