Grad school chances!

Hi All,

I graduated from CMU in 2009 with a Bachelor in Mechanical Engineering. I have worked in several top companies in each of Consulting, Insurance, and Finance fields with Business Analyst roles. My goal is to become an engineer in companies like Google, Apple, etc, so I am applying for grad programs in Computer Science and Mechanical Engineering.

Ugrad GPA: 3.78
GRE: 600V 700Q 4.5W

As for CS, I've got a couple of ugrad classes in Java and C++, but not much more than that.
For ME, I don't have any working experience in the engineering sector which is my biggest concern.

What are my chances for these schools for both Computer Science & Mechanical Engineering programs?

Stanford
MIT
Carnegie Mellon
Berkeley
Cornell
Cal Tech
Columbia
UCLA
Princeton

Many thanks,
Chowder

Sorry i meant 160V and 170Q 4.5W for GRE…

You are definitely competitive for these programs. Since you are applying to Masters programs, it is likely you will get into several of them. For a CS program, you might be asked to take some remedial work because your degree is in ME. For an ME program, I don’t think that your work experience is a detriment.

All that being said, these are selective programs you are applying to and nothing is guaranteed.

Finally, if your ultimate goal is to work at Apple or Google, you might find that CS is a better choice.

Thanks so much! I feel much better now!
