Grad school for human resources management?

Hey all,

I majored in industrial and labor relations as an undergrad and after working for almost a year, I have decided to pursue further education for this time of my life.

I was looking at Cornell mostly, but I was not sure if that would be the best option I have due to financial restrains. I was wondering if anyone else had a suggestion on a good masters program for HR field, or a place where I can search.

Thanks all!

Given your undergrad major why do you feel you need a master’s in HR? What city do you live in? Many universities have part time MS and MBA program.

I would just work and then maybe do an online masters. Experience is more important.

If you are already experienced working now, give serious consideration to online or local while you work.

As a former HR Manager, I strongly recommend working a few more years before deciding if you need a masters degree. Positions that require an advanced degree also typically require 5-10+ years of progressive/managerial experience in the field, so you have some time to decide. Your work experience will matter more at this point in your career than tacking on another degree. Are you looking to specialize or be more of a generalist? Gaining experience as a generalist is great for your resume and will give you a better idea of your strengths in the field if you choose to specialize later on.

That being said, Rutger’s has an excellent program, as does Villanova (I’m only familiar with programs in the NY, NJ, PA areas). An online degree is also a good option, and I’ve heard good things about Penn State’s World Campus program. However, I strongly suggest more work experience and finding an employer that offers tuition reimbursement if your current one does not.

Also, consider how much focus you want to have on labor relations/union environments versus leadership programs. Rutgers has two programs (Labor & Employee Relations and Human Resources Management), whereas other programs tend to be balanced, or lean in one direction.
