Grad School for Industrial Engineering

Hello,

I am currently going to be a senior at Penn State University (top 5 undergrad school in IE) majoring in Industrial Engineering. I am wanting to go to grad school after college and I am just looking for some general advice.

Credentials:

Major: Industrial Engineering
Minor: Six Sigma Methodology
GPA: 3.41
Major GPA: 3.40
Extracurricular Activities: Active Member of IIE (institute of industrial engineers), Active Member of Alpha Pi Mu (IE honors Fraternity), Member of American Society of Quality
Work Experience: Two summers of relevant engineering internships. One at a very large manufacturing company (Flowserve). Also held various jobs throughout high school and college (not engineering related).

Here's my situation:

I have not decided whether or not I am wanting to go into the work force and go to an online school or go to an actual campus. I have a girlfriend who is a senior as well (actuarial science) so depending on where/if she gets a job will play an impact on whether I do an online program or not.

Here are some of the schools that I am looking at:

On campus:
-RPI
-Northeastern
-Boston College
-University of New Haven (a small school in Conn)

Online:
-Arizona State Online
-University of Florida
-Binghamton University (may consider the on campus program as well..I need to research this school some more)

What do you guys think? Especially about RPI and Northeastern. Am I aiming WAY to high to try and get into those two schools? I haven't taken the GRE yet, but I have been studying a lot for it, so hopefully I can do decent. What about an online program? How credible is a program such as one at Arizona State Online or University of Florida? Both have told me that upon completion of their program nothing on my diploma says anything about it being online. Finally, are there any other programs that I should look into that I haven't come across yet? I am especially interested in Operations Research and Quality Engineering.

sorry for the LONG first post. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Austin

I’m starting a masters in IE this fall, and I was accepted to Northeastern and Penn State (among others) to do the OR track. Considering your GPA is higher than mine I’d say there is a decent chance you’ll get into Northeastern. It’s tough to say though because my application looked a lot different than yours will…I didn’t do my undergrad in IE…or even engineering.

I understand why Arizona state, RPI, and Northeastern are on your list but not the others…especially BC. I haven’t heard of there being engineering at BC, and I’m not sure New Haven, UF, or Bringhamton have OR programs.

Thanks for your info!

…Yea i accidentally typed Boston college when i meant to say Boston university (there’s quite a difference!). They have a program in systems engineering (something that I was originally looking into, but i’m now not as interested in).

New Haven is a small school (with programs/certificates in Quality and 6sigma) that I would primary use as my backup school in case I didn’t get into the others or if my g/f happened to get a job in that area (in her field the majority of the jobs are in the northeastern area…esp Connecticut).

Binghamton has a Masters in Industrial/Systems and would waver my GRE scores since I went to Penn State, however after looking more into the college (after my first post) I’m kind of on fence about their program.

thanks for all your help!

Hi Euler,

I’m interested in IE too. What school did you get in? And what is your stat?
I am a math major with a slightly lower GPA tham 3.4 with a research and a bunch of advanced math courses. I’m not sure what schools I should be looking at because of my low GPA.
Thanks in advance!
