Hey all,
I'm going to be a sophomore next year at Brown and have always toyed with the idea of going to grad school. I'm currently a math/phil double major and wanted to know how competitive it is to go to a top school or how I would go about finding these stats. Thoughts?

I've heard it's harder to get into top undergraduate schools than it is to get into a top grad school but I imagine that varies a lot by discipline, etc.

Thanks in advance,
Claymangs

Getting into a top math graduate school is EXTREMELY difficult, and unless you have an extremely good record, I wouldn't really even try...

However, the good part about grad school is that there are a lot of spots open in public schools, so even if you can't get into Harvard, you might be able to get into a top-10 school like Michigan with sub-par stats and get an equally great education/advising.

Note that there are only about 10 spots open per private school for math majors and about 20-30 at public schools. That means that at the top 10 schools, there will be about 150 acceptances. About 1/4 - 1/2 of these are internationals. You're also competing against tons of people from top math undergraduate schools such as Chicago, MIT, Harvard, et al... schools that send 10-20 of their students each year to top 10 schools.
