hello, i am just wondering how much does freshman year weigh in graduate school admissions? Thanks!

The same as any other year. From my experience it is all about the cumulative GPA, but also the major GPA. But If there is a big discrepancy between freshman year and the other years it might be possible to make that clear and/or explain why.

word on the street is that some programs/universities weight junior and senior years much more heavily

Most programs I applied to clearly asked for the GPA of the last two years in addition to overall and major/minor GPAs. I would assume that means that at least some interest is given to the last two years.

Interesting. All the programs I applied to seemed interested only in the overall.

What kinds of programs, if I may be so bold?

im confused I didnt think that overall gpa was taken into account for grad school. but if that is the case than what overall gpa would be good for a top ten program?

I applied to history Ph.D and IR MA programs. They seemed interested in the overall and the major GPAs but didn't differentiate between freshman or sophomore grades and junior and senior ones.

josephine,

I applied to IR programs, and UCSD IR/PS and SAIS both wanted my last two years' GPA.

Where you off to?

The last two years...boy, am I screwed...

UCLAri, I'm going to Uchicago. I didn't apply to SAIS or UCSD and neither Chicago or my other schools wanted last two year's GPA.

Huh, weird.

What concentration are you going for at Harris?

harris????

My major GPA stinks....not bad, but it's like on the low end of 3.0. My overal GPA is better but still below what it ought to be. Hopefully I can construct a good personal statement. Ugh...I have not even formally started the application process and it's already more stressful than it was when I applied dor undergrad!

Josephine - we're leaving Chicago in June (husband was in med school there) and I've lived in the area my whole life. If you have any questions about the campus, area, etc. let me know.

Josephine,

Sorry, I thought that when you said UChicago after I said IR programs that you were going to get your MPP.

Thanks DespSeekPhd. I don't know much about Chicago at all, I've only visited once and that was four years ago.
