I understand if you graduate in the top 40% you can choose if you would like to attend grad school. I'm assuming this would take an extra 2 years but is this 2 yrs added onto the 5 you already owe? I've always had this question but have forgotten to ask, although I could check up on the info this coming weekend on the CVW. Thanks

That's a very good question.

I know in the olden days it used to be for every year of grad school you attended you'd have to give two years back to the Navy (that is, if the Navy paid for it). I don't know about today.

A close friend of mine is in his final semester at USNA, and instead of attending classes at the Yard, he and about 20 others drive to Georgetown everyday. His major was Political Science, and now he's studying something along the lines of national security.

I recall him telling me that he's going there on "the Navy's time", meaning he doesn't have to give any more service for it. Unfortunately, he's also required to pay for a good deal of it...Navy covers part of it, but he's still paying about 10k per semester.

That's probably the trade off. They make you pay, but you don't owe any more time.

If you go to grad school after USNA and they pay for it you owe time...

You may want to ask the class of 2004 and 2005.Many are being offered grad school as there are no slots available for their chosen field at this time. There is no cost and no time extension taking place. This is expected to continue for another year or two.

"If you go to grad school after and they pay for it you owe time..."

Not necessarily. If you're in the Fleet and use the Navy's "Tuition Assistance Program," 100% tuition of your tuition is paid for, assuming you have 2+ yrs of service left once you finish your degree. There is no additional obligation.

Generally, if you get involved in one of the programs where your whole "job" is to go to grad school, then you can expect to serve an extra 2 yrs for every 1 year of school the Navy pays for.

"There is no cost and no time extension taking place."

Wow! The start of the service obligation is at least being delayed while the mid is in school, right?

I do not think it is.There is also people obtaining their grad degree and being "released" as there is a current excess and back-up in a few fields.(ie. naval pilot and swo)

how much time back you serve for grad school depends on what you service select, it is extra time if you go marine corps

LOL. BS.
