grad school

I'm going into my junior year of Environmental Engineering. I'm taking an elective class this term. Will the grade be looked at for grad school? I understand that grad schools only look at upper years. While this class will be taken between 2nd and 3rd year its a 1st year class. So i'm wondering if grad schools will look at this.

thanks

That’s actually the first time I’ve heard of grad schools only looking at upper year courses. Are you sure you didn’t hear that they looked at courses in your major? Those are typically taken in your junior and senior years, so maybe that’s what they meant?

I also never heard of grad schools only looking at classes in your major, but I think they do weigh it more heavily than Psychology 101.

Most grad schools look at your overall GPA and your major GPA. Some schools however, notably Berkeley and Utexas calculate your GPA as upperdivision coursework only (as in all upper division courses in your major or not). But yes, they will see the grade for this class.

Whether or not they see one class will make such a slight difference that it wont matter (unless you fail it). That said, some universities ask specifically for junior/senior GPA (like northwestern), some ask specifically for major GPA, some dont ask for anything other than general GPA. But in the end research experience and GRE scores will carry much more weight than one or two classes in your GPA.
