Grad student housing

So I will be attending grad school here in the fall, but plan to move to Austin (from the west coast) in a few days. From what a few grad students have told me, I heard that the apartments at Hyde Park, North Campus, and Far West are the best options in terms of price and location. I want a quiet atmosphere and would strongly prefer living alone with no roommates. All the places I've checked on Craigslist for that description have costed about 650-750 per month

Are there any other suggestions for housing for someone like me? I see that the Castilian is rather expensive and I think all the rents for Singles at Dobie are all taken and are expensive.

Also, how far are the grocery and convenience stores (ie CVS pharmacy) from campus and the apartments? Is it worth it to bring a car if I only plan to study/stay on campus, buy groceries and go to the convenience store, and hopefully get a tutoring job at the House of tutors? I plan on driving here to move my stuff, and then try living here for a few weeks. If I decide I don't need it, I can sell it or drive it back home for my family to use and then taking a flight back to UT

Also, how are the co-ops and University apartments for grad students like me who want to focus on studying and not much socializing?

for the University apartments, according to http://www.utexas.edu/student/housin...scode=2&id=292

They said “You may contact the office regarding a request for a specific complex you may prefer, however there is no guarantee that you will get an apartment in that complex”
and
“Even though you are allowed to indicate your preferred move-in date, we do not guarantee an apartment for a particular move-in date”

how reliable is this? Since my guess is that if I submit an application now, I probably won’t be able to move in until a few months, right? Is it possible to rent a place short-term and then find a spot in the university apartments ?
Also, I’m not even sure yet if I will stay there until May as there’s a chance I will have to leave after May '12

You can really live anywhere in Austin. While in grad school I lived in four different places, only one of them on a shuttle route, but I rode a motorcycle and didn’t take the bus. I know a grad student who just finished who lived happily alone in an apartment off Gracy Farms way up north.

Any of the apartments off Far West or Greystone are walking distance from an HEB grocery store. I think there’s a CVS over there too. You wouldn’t need a car if you lived on Far West or Greystone or North Hills.

Sorry, but I can’t help you with the other questions.

Hmm. I’ve met some grad students who live out by Barton Springs. Yeah, anywhere really, just depends on how far you wanna commute. The Hyde Park area in north campus is always nice and peaceful. If you go just a little further of the ‘‘west campus’’ district, like Enfield or Windsor – I’ve seen some apt. complexes there that aren’t half bad! And it’s really quiet past Lamar.

I was going to recommend the co-ops but I just checked their availability and they’re pretty much full for the fall/spring 11’-12’ year. There are ones specifically occupied by grad students like Opsis. They’re quiet themselves but in west campus so regardless it’ll be loud sometimes. The only co-op still open has 3 male double rooms available but that is NOT a place for a grad student. hah

Anyway, the 1L/1M bus route goes right by UT, so if you were wanting to get to campus that way, I would follow the route out and map my way to go look for places to live. I think that would be a smart move. Of course, there are other bus routes to look at too. S’all I know. Good luck!

Also if you still can’t find a place near or around campus to work for you, theres another line of co-op houses where not everyone has to be a college student unlike the College Houses line. It’s [ICC Austin: Affordable Co-operative Student Housing](http://www.iccaustin.coop) – You can contact their membership coordinators if you’re interested in any of them and you can tour them and everything!
