My son is a student in PA, but is coming to Columbus for a 6 week internship/rotation. Was hoping to rent some place near the university that is furnished from 5/18-6/30. Any suggestions? Thanks.

I suggest he look on facebook in some of the OSU student groups (there should be one each for the classes of 2013, 2014 and 2015) for people advertising a sublet. It may be more difficult to find one that is furnished, but there should be plenty of people looking for someone to pay their rent while they’re out of town for the summer.

Thanks, maybell. I didn’t know he could do that if not an OSU student. How are Kinnear Commons and Fisher Commons?

I’m not familiar with either, in the sense that I don’t know anyone who lives there, but neither are actually right next to campus–they’re across the river–and that isn’t where I would choose to live if I were picking an apartment. The area is fairly safe, but there isn’t much to do. If your son wants to have something of a social life while he’s here, I recommend subletting a room in a larger house or apartment of OSU students, right off campus, so that he can join whoever is still living there for social stuff. Rent should be between $300-$500 a room, typically.

I don’t think there is any checking to make sure the people in the facebook groups attend OSU, so there shouldn’t be any issue with joining the groups just to scan for posts about sublets available.

Is your son commuting downtown, or is there a particular reason why he wants to live by campus other than the nightlife and people his own age? If he is commuting downtown, and doesn’t want to have to drive and deal with parking, the COTA bus system, for which he would be able to buy a monthly pass, has multiple stops right off campus to the east side (High Street), and then the bus trip downtown from campus is only about 15 minutes. It is a very convenient way to travel if just going between downtown and the campus area.

Thanks, maybell. He ended up renting a room from a friend of a friend near King and High St. Gulp!
