My son was accepted to a graduate program in Steinhardt that doesn't offer anything to its MA students. How does financial aid work at NYU for graduate students? Based on his income he has an EFC of about $4,000. I know that the Federal programs are for undergraduates. Will NYU offer him any grants based on his need?

Hi, I got accepted to Steinhardt Music Technology Masters program, still awaiting my fin aid package. Will let ya know if it’s anything to write home about … no pun intended.

Thanks for responding. I just don’t completely understand how financial aid, not RA/TA, works for grad students. Do you know?

My son is also the wl for the same type of program, media and culture, at Texas. They promised to let him know by 4.15. So we’ll see.

I’m an undergraduate applying to grad schools in the fall, and I was under the assumption that most MAs are unfunded.

I am not interested in what a department offers its grad students through TAs or RAs or stipends or tuition remissions. There will be none in my son’s department for MA candidates. But does NYU offer its grad admittances, who demonstrate financial need through FAFSA, financial assistance as they do for undergraduates? If so, does it include grants or only loans?

It’s my understanding that there is no school-wide graduate financial aid program at NYU. Whatever financial aid is offered is school-based, except for the government loan programs you qualify for based on your FAFSA. Here is a link for Steinhardt’s graduate financial aid page: [Financial Aid - NYU Steinhardt](Paying for Your Education | NYU Steinhardt)

In general, masters degree programs are usually not funded, unless you qualify for a national scholarship or fellowship like a Fulbright, FLAS, or NSF, or if your school has a matching program like the TIP program in GSAS. Most PhD students are at least partially funded, and many have full funding. This is the case at most universities, not just at notoriously stingy NYU. College Confidential has a graduate school link on their home page that has information and forums that discuss graduate school financial aid. Best of luck to you and your son.

Thanks. Hopefully he gets something other than loans or he gets into the Texas program, which is considerably cheaper.
