just wondering, are u guys getting any grades changed because of wat u scored on AP's? wat grade are u getting changed and for wat score? several ppl i know are getting pretty large boosts for 4's or 5's on tests.

i dont think they do that at my school, besides if someone got a 1 or 2 would u lower their grade?

I guess it's just teachers being nice.
I mean, the mentality is that if you do well on the AP, you clearly learned the material, even if your class grades do not reflect that.

No one at my school does it, but I've heard of it from people here on CC.

And to the prodpect of lowering a grade: of course not! That would be horrible...some people just test badly. And, it could be partially the teacher's fault. Besides, it's the same thing as how most teachers, if they score your test wrong, will change it if they didn't give you all your points, but won't retroactively take away points.

I'm getting a whole 4 grades changed due to my scoring on AP tests.

For most AP Classes in my school, there are 2 quarters that are considered and honors portion and 2 quarters that are considered an AP portion. Only those 2 AP quarters will be changed based on AP tests scores. For each class, they have a deal, that says what you have to receive on a certain AP test and how high your grade can be raised. I'll just tell you about my 3 AP's.

AP Biology: If you just pass the exam (3 or above), your percentage for the 2 AP quarters of the class can be raised up to 5%. I received a 93% in one AP quarter, so i'm fine with that, but I received an 86% for another AP quarter. I scored a 4 on the AP Biology test, so my grade will go to an A!

AP Calculus AB: If you get a 4 or 5 on the AP Exam, then your grade will go up by ONE LETTER GRADE, but again, only for those 2 AP quarters. I got a 4, and one B in an AP quarter so my grade will go to an A!

AP US History: If you get a 4 or 5 on the AP Exam, then your grade will also go up by ONE LETTER GRADE, however, this is a little different than the other two classes. Our APUSH class is combined with Honors American Literature (HAL) for a full 1 year class (My school has the "block" scheduling, so there are only 4 classes in a day for 1 1/2 hours long for each class). Anyway, we don't receive grades by QUARTER for both APUSH and HAL, but rather recieve 2 grades at the end of each semester (One for APUSH and one for HAL). So, if you get a 4 or 5, that can only change the grades that you receive in APUSH. I received 2 B's in that class, but I got a 4 on the AP Exam, so that will raise both of them to A's!!! :)

Oh, and there's no negative marking on your grade if you fail the AP exam.

So that's how my ap grade system works at my school.

Hm...I've never heard of that...AP grades don't affect our grades at all.

Must be nice. We have a friend who got a C in APUSH (didn't turn in a project, apparently) and a 4 on the exam, and her grade is being changed to an A. It will preserve her val/sal status.

DS1 had high Bs in AP English all year, got a 5 on the exam (not a surprise -- he's an excellent writer). Teacher told them he grades harder than the AP folks, and he was right. His school doesn't change grades based on AP scores, and they don't +/-, either. Two more threes in in the ol' GPA.

Sometimes I wonder colleges can accurately evaluate transcripts when there is so much behind-the-scenes horse trading for grades going on back at the local school.

This is why I always thought that the scores on the tests were so much more meaningful than the grades in the course.

At my school, it varies from course to course. In AP Calculus AB, for instance, a 5 guarantees a B, a 4 guarantees a C, and a 3 guarantees a D for first semester. In AP Calculus BC, any student who had a + on their grade would get bumped for a 5 (i.e. a B+ becomes an A-). Neither class has a penalty for low scores.

If one receives a 5 on the AP Euro exam, my teacher automatically changes their grade to an A.

I already had an A in APUSH and I got a 4 in the class.

Here's how my APUSH teacher changes grades:

1 drops a letter grade
2 grade stays the same
3 goes up a letter grade
4 and 5 guarantreed A

My grade stayed the same: A.

My Bio teacher promised that if we passed the exam, he would change every quarter grade to an A. Unfortunately, I did awful and I received a 2. Guess I'm going to have to live with my 'C' in 1st semester...oi vey!

nhsharvard, that's kinda messed up imo. my entire apush class would've gotten A's then. grades are supposed to represent how well you did in the class, and the ap score for how well you did on the test. the two are independent. that's almost like saying i got an 800 on the SAT II us history, and then a 5 on the AP, so they should change the 4 to a 5. absurd.

life is not fair lol. it wouldn't change nething for me if my school did do that, but extra points never hurt!

My US History teacher raise up the grade to an A if we pass the AP exam, which I did pass (got an B on my report card hehe). Passing as in a 3,4,or 5.
I am not sure if he does that for the 1st semester though... hopefully haha

lol some of ur grade changes are ridiculous. an A for just PASSING the exam?? thats ridiculous. 60% of students will pass an AP test, so does that mean 60% of them are A students?

at my school, only our APUSH teacher will bump up a full letter grade for a 4 or 5 on AP. didnt affect me, but still.

i can understand it for a 5...but senluck and andover, ur teachers are totally trippin..

Our AP English Language/Literature /Art History teacher (same one for all three) will change your grade to an A for a 5 or a B for a 4. Her class is ridiculously hard and she never curves anything (not that I regret it). Luckily, I had A's in all 3 classes without "needing" a 5. But, in Eng. Lang. I was the only one with an A and maybe two/three people with B's (out of over 60). To most people getting a B (or C) in the class is a miracle. Definitely a challenge, but worth it.

None of my other teachers will change your grade. I think our APUSH teacher was considering it, but there wouldn't have been much movement once we got the scores back (only 2 5's -we both had A's- and 1 or 3 4's...can't remember)

On the other hand, our calculus teacher refuses to change grades based on the AP score probably because he prepares you so well for the exam, and people would REALLY slack off if they knew it was changed at the end of the year. (Whereas if you don't pay attention or slack off in AP Eng at our school, you will not do well on the exam).

i donno about grade changing. it seems fair to say that grade in class deserves separate work than the grade on the AP, so the scores should be independent of one another. then again, if it was done correctly, would eliminate "grade inflation" in an outward sense

for US History, if u passed u automatically get an A
if u failed ur grade stays the same

I don't think my school would allow that.

It seems like a way of allowing people to slack off in class as long as they do well on the exam.

AP chem teacher changes all grades to an A if you get a 5 on the exam.
