My school has a unique grading system that is considered “other” on applications and I have to use essay space to give the conversions. This makes me nervous as I then have to rely on the admissions person to take the time to re-calculate my grades with this conversion chart (this chart provides conversion from their numerical grades to IB grades, percentages and letter grades). Can this be relied on? I am currently talking with my school on having the conversion right on the transcript so there is no room for error. Reason…my school’s GPA is 2.9 unweighted, 3.4 weighted, but when I convert my GPA to letter grades, my GPA becomes 3.3 unweighted and 3.8 weighted. See why I am nervous? Any advice on experience with this would be very helpful (I am a US student living abroad, so I am applying as a US citizen, not an international student).
Unless the college in question asks you to convert to a 4.0 scale (which is extremely unlikely), do not convert; report to GPA. Match the scale with however your school will put on your transcript. You should assume that colleges will have international admissions offer(s) who are familiar with grading scales in different countries and that there is grade deflation associated with certain counties.
