GPA- (9th and 10th grade)
unweighted: 3.56
weighted: 4.5
I changed schools because my other school was really bad. Teachers were mean and did not teach well at all. Some would just open the book and read right from it without being able to even explain what they were reading. They liked to see kids fail.
I got all A’s last year in all honors classes besides English honors, AP french and AP human geography (where I got B’s). However I got a score of 5 on both.
How will colleges look at that? Will they see the grade deflation, or think something else?
Furthermore my school does not rank, but since I was in National Honor Society, I was considered to be “in the top 10 percent”. There is no proof for that however. I was probably in the top 5% because NHS was for people 3.3 gpa and higher. (The people surrounding me where a very bad influence and had really bad grades, like I was considered really smart). How do I prove all that to colleges??? How is that even fair?!!
Btw I really want to go to NYU and am currently in 11th grade IB, in a new school and I have all A’s
Help!!! please, I would really appreciate and give the user a like and helpful
Just do well this year and move on. Don’t let “bad influences” affect you.
Be sure to include this in the Additional Information section of your application. It will help colleges get an accurate opinion of you.
All we have to go on is your post, which I’m sorry to say comes across badly, almost like a tantrum (“It’s not fair” “It’s all the teachers fault” “It’s the those other people’s fault” “They like to see kids fail”)
Getting a higher mark on an AP exam than in the course is not grade deflation, and it’s not even uncommon.
Every school has to provide a profile of the school, including info such as the average GPA for the class, the number of AP subjects they offer, how many AP exams are taken, the number of students getting each mark, the SAT/ACT range and median for the class, etc. So, the colleges that you apply to will see that profile and look at where you fit within it, and they will look at how you compare with the rest of your school. Because they will have the profile of your old school they can check that as well, though most of them probably won’t. That’s why this year (which I gather is grade 11?) is so critical: you can show what you are capable of.
As for your chances- chances for what? getting in to a college? of course you can. Specific colleges? it will depend in good part on what you achieve this year. All the energy that you have put into your posts should be going in to getting top marks and doing something constructive with your time outside of class.
