A while back I heard about grade deflation at BU. DD is considering BU, but is concerned about grade deflation, especially if she decides to transfer or go to grad school. Can anyone give their perspective on this? Especially as it pertains to Sargent College?

Thanks, BUBailey! I assume you’re a BU student from your username?

Proud graduate as of last year :)

ps there are a lot more Grade Deflation threads on here if you do some searches. I for one don’t believe the hype, but you’ll find others who think differently.

Thanks, I did find them after you mentioned it. Think I saw a comment like “we’ve beaten this topic to death” that led me to conclusion there was more discussion to be found ;)

I heard someone describe grade deflation and it sounded like the tough but good British professors I had a American College (now University) in Paris… “I give one A, and 3 B’s…” But I ended up getting a B+ in the class, worked my butt off and learned a lot. We just didn’t have a name for the concept back then.

That’s how I feel too…it’s all in how you look at things. Sometimes life just works out that way sometimes…better to get used to it now. A less-than-I-expected grade just makes me want to work harder than ever to get the A next time. I’m in law school now, and everyone just accepts the fact that there is a cold, hard oft-arbitrary curve. Use grade deflation rumors to fuel your fire, not drive you away from BU.

you’re in law school at William and Mary then (from your location)? Either way, looks like “grade deflation” didn’t hurt you at all. Thanks for your perspective!

haha, kind of a dead giveaway huh? not much else going on in colonial williamsburg.

I haven’t had an issue with grade deflation, but Sargent is probably the most difficult college there is here. But I think the health sciences in general are like that at every university. Classes like physiology, anatomy, gross anatomy, etc are extremely difficult and many struggle to get a C.

Aside from that, it is quite possible (and in some cases easy) to get A’s in your classes.
