Grade Deflation/Inflation

I know that in schools with Deflation it's difficult to maintain a high GPA, but what exactly do these terms mean? As in, HOW does it make it "easier" or harder to maintain the high GPA? Also anyone know which one UCLA is?
Thanks!

I’m going to speak in examples:

Grade Deflation: You get a C in a class, when you would’ve gotten an A in any other school.

Grade Inflation: You get an A in a class, when you would’ve gotten a C in any other school.

Any idea which category UCLA would fit into? I’m in Engineering if it makes a difference

Engineering in general at any school is massive deflation.

What about holy cross or villanova

Ah **** 10char

correction: engineering is not deflation, it’s just hard
