Hey! I have heard a lot about grade deflation at BU especially in the sciences. I know this makes it really hard to get into med-school, grad school, etc. I would love insight from current students on how true this is. Thanks

I think its pretty true (current pre-med student). The average grade for classes like BIO 108 is a C+ and that doesn’t change regardless of the quality of the class the average grade for 101/102 is a C+/B-. [Grade Deflation or Not? | BU Today | Boston University](http://www.bu.edu/today/2007/grade-deflation-or-not/)

Here is a quote from the article “Stories about easy As began to surface in the early 1990s: the average GPA at Stanford climbed from 3.04 in 1968 to 3.44 in 1992; between 1984 and 1999 the percentage of A and A– grades at Georgetown jumped from 28 percent to 46 percent; and a study of 34 colleges by a Duke professor revealed that between 1992 and 2002 the average GPA at private colleges went from 3.11 to 3.26.” So BU, an institution with students that are better than the average private school students have a worse GPA.

@Vlklngboy11 as a pre-med student, do you feel that despite the grade deflation at BU it offers you resources to successfully apply to med school? How supportive is the pre-med advising office in helping you plan your future? Do you feel that putting the time and effort in can get you an A or do you feel like it is out of your hands? Sorry for the bombardment, it’s an important decision also, do you know anything about the acceptance rate to BU medical school from BU undergrad or any special programs? I have been admitted and it is looking like a good option but the grade deflation scares me… I would really love your input!

I’m exactly sure what you mean by the resources BU offers… it is fairly easy to work at the medical campus and get research experience at some point though it usually doesnt happen your first year. My adviser has told me that the pre-professional office is really just something to check into once a semester, but there is a website I think that has stuff like volunteering information though it just kinda points you there. The pre-professional advising office will only write you a letter of rec if you have a 3.5+ which is ridiculous unless you are really tight with them I hear. I don’t know anything about the BUMC acceptance rate with BU students but those numbers will be inflated due to the 7 year med admits and ENGMed admits and the MMedic admits. I cannot imagine it is too high though otherwise they would probably mention it.
