How is the courseload of JHU? Are marks inflated or deflated? also, what mark do they consider an A, B, C, etc (i.e. 4, 3, 2, etc)? or is the grading system universal?

thanks! post your questions too!

A+ = 4.0
A = 4.0
A- = 3.7
B+ = 3.3
B = 3.0
B- = 2.7
C+ = 2.3
C = 2.0
C- = 1.7
D+ = 1.3
D = 1.0
F = 0.0

thanks very much jarvis

does anyone know how these marks are distributed in class?
basically, are marks inflated or deflated in general compared to ivy league schools?

deflated. The Ivies are famous for grade inflation, particularly at Harvard. Everyone knows that a 3.5 from JHU means the student worked for it, but a 4.0 from Harvard is expected. Graduating from JHU means something, graduating from Harvard means you got in, which is impressive, but its easier to stay there

I don't think grades at JHU are deflated as much as other colleges inflate grages. I currently attend JHU and am applying to graduate school. In conversations with different professsors, a couple explicity stated JHU is one of the few schools that does not inflate grades.

You work to get what you get. I don't think this means that grades are deflated; it's just not easy.

i heard ppl were really cut-throat, not collaborating and such, because the classes are all curved....is this true ?

bumpety bump

This is not true. I am a current hopkins freshman, and a lot of the homeworks I am assigned in my classes are difficult, so a bunch of the people in the class and I form study groups where we all help each other with all the problems. It is easier for all of us to help eachother out whenever we can, and then work individually during the tests.

linz666 how about the grading? Is it harder than other schools? What's your major?

I'm math or chem major...i havent decided yet. the grading is very fair. if you work hard, you'll get the grade you deserve. Most classes have curves that help you. The only reason the grading may be harder is because they expect a certain level of work from us. But it's all relative; if no one does well...your grade will be curved up. I haven't gotten a grade I didn't feel I deserved
