What exactly is grade inflation/deflation? Is it only an issue at large universities, or is it also a problem at small LAC's? How does it affect you?

Thanks -- I know this is probably a dumb question to some

Grade inflation: it is relatively easy to get a high grade, with the majority of students getting A’s and B’s. Sometimes 20-30% of class will get A. Also, sometimes impossible to drop below a C.

Grade deflation: very difficult to get high grades, with few students getting A’s.

It can be a “problem” anywhere, not simply constrained to large universities.

thanks – I’m guessing colleges do it so that more of their students have high GPA’s or something?

Sure, and it enhances their likelihood of getting into a good grad school, thus boosting the prestige of the undergrad college, etc.
