Prompt: Is it important to question the ideas and decisions of people in positions of authority?
(Taken from the Blue Book 2nd Edition Practice Test 1)

There have always been people out there who have authority over others. They can be most certainly right in their ideas at times but can also be wrong. It is definitely important to question these people because their actions and ideas, although sometimes wrong, can be considered injustice or simply misleading. Zeitoun Abdulrahman from the book "Zeitoun" and teachers in schools depict this idea.

In "Zeitoun," after Hurricane Katrina had devastated the city of New Orleans, Zeitoun Abdulrahman found himself navigating through the city day by day, saving people from Katrina's damages. He was then soon arrested by troops who accused him as a terrorist and thereafter sent to prison. Here, Zeitoun began to question the people in authority which in this case were the troops. Zeitoun had not been given rights to defend himself nor was her able to make phone calls to his wife. The troops' actions on Zeitoun reveal how certain decisions are often wrong and not morally correct resulting in the need to question the people of authority.

Question authority doesn't necessarily have to involve issues as big as that of Zeitoun's arrest; schools can pertain to questioning as well. For example in my school, there is this idea of questioning as part of the school habit. Students here are often encouraged to question many ideas and concepts that teachers teach and is important. If a teacher was to teach a concept such as in math or physics with a possible flaw, then questioning that flaw would be essential. This, as the prompt says, would not only make the person doing the questioning a more vigilant and better thinker, but also to be able to point out flaws that may have an impact on later learning.

Both the Zeitoun and school scenarios exemplifies this idea that questioning is important. It puts into use a new way of thinking as well as correcting possibly wrong thoughts or doings. If a society wasn't allowed to question those with authority, then it wouldn't be as developed as it is today through the lack of criticism.
