The statement "no progress is possible without sacrifice" is most clearly demonstrated in ths history of our country. The founding fathers as well as our government have always found that sacrifice is a necessity for the general welfare of society. The idea that we must give up what we have for a better innovation is logical. Historical evidence has shown our country that sacrifice is exactly what got us ahead.

The American Revolution entailed enormous sacrifice on the colonies, which were not independent from Great Britain yet. Most colonists and even the founding fathers were loyal to the King of England. However, they found that their home country's didactic and imposing rule conflicted with their desire to have some source of freedom in their new land. In order to progress in obtaining what the founding fathers believed to be their inherent rigvhts, they needed to break from Great Britain who refused to even negotiate. Leading up to the revolution, this signified how the colonists needed to throw away their citizenship as English people to beomce their own and later set up an American government. The war itself also showed the devestating results from the deaths of colonists who were fighting for freedom.

The Civil War is another example of how sacrifice is a necessity of progression. With the same values and innate rights and freedom, some historians believe that the Civil War was fought as a moral cause against slavery. Today, slavery is thought of as backwards and reactionary, which only shows the great progression that was coming forward back then. The United States almost split into two, and the union was put as enormous risk. The south seceded from the north at the time when relations between the two were hostile from the different economic ways of life, which included slavery. Progress for greater democracy and the abolition of slavery was made possible because of the sacrifice of thousands of lives during the war. The south and slave-owners also had to give up their way of life for the preservation of the union and progression of the country.

The war further led to greater progress in the economy. The Industrial Revolution, espeically, exemplified this progress. it also entailed more sacrifice through environmental pollution from the newly built factories, child labor, economic recessions, and inflations. However, the adverse effects also ended up boosting the economy of the U.S. in domestic and international matters even to this day.

The history of the U.S. has proven that progression must involve enormous sacrifice. The validity of this statement comes from the fact that the U.S. is now the superpower of the world in which no other country can challenge its status. This all comes from sacrifices the country have made to preserve the very meaning of its existence and the values we hold even to this day.
