Prompt: Sometimes it is necessary to challenge what people in authority claim to be true. Although some respect for authority is, no doubt, necessary in order for any group or organization to function, questioning the people in charge- even if they are experts or leaders in their fields- makes us better thinkers. It forces all concerned to defend old ideas and decisions and to consider new ones. Sometimes it can even correct old errors in thought and put an end to wrong actions.

Assignment:Is it important to question the ideas and decisions of people in authority?

Challenging Ideas and decisions of people in authority is a vital step in self improvement, yet respect must be maintained when correcting or challenging ideas of people in authority. Several examples in literary works and history clearly delineate the importance of challenging authorities and questioning their ideals.

The actions of Jack Welch, Junior engineer who reconstructed the way GE worked, proved to be vital in the companies growth. Through the 1980's "GE" or simply General Electric went through catastrophic downfalls to the point that they could have closed down, but the ambitious ideals of a young junior engineer reconstructed the company and inspired amazing growth. Jack Welch came into GE as a junior engineer and realized the company was run too harshly and, with strict rules and without a sense of teamwork. He challenged this system set by his superiors and hence demonstrated that respectfully challenging people of authority is necessary for growth.

In the historical battle of the frontier the US forces were horridly losing to the French powers and were on the brink of being taken over. A simple cadet,Ferdinand Fooche, advised his general Leceisteire that the means of attack be changed. Fooche, a cadet, gave the idea that the US forces could slide past the French forces and eventually surround them instead of attacking directly from the front. Unconvinced at first the General gave way to the Cadet's cries and U.S forces won the battle of the Frontier. Therefore it is clearly shown that challenging superiors respectfully is vital for mutual benefit.

Schools have grown dramatically because of the open atmosphere created by teachers. In my math class the teacher had once accidentally written the formula for the Pythagorean identity wrong so i decided to respectfully point out to him his mistake. The teacher jokingly accepted and fixed the formula and thanking me for speaking up and fixing the mistake.Hence it can be seen that due to the checking of my teacher my question, the whole class was not misinformed.

Through the examples of the actions of Jack Welch, cadet Fooche, and my simple question of the teacher, it can be seen how challenging authorities is vital for self-growth and improvement.
