Hey guys, This was a essay I did today in the blue book.

Topic: Do you think that ease does not challenge us and that we need adversity to help us discover who we are?

Overcoming adversity is not an easy task. However, people who have overcome adversity often come out stronger than they were before. Why? It is because they have learned to be patient in all circumstances. In the novel Brave New World and the story of Lance Armstrong it is evident that adversity helps discover who we are.
In Brave New World, John reacts to the futuristic one world society with contempt and disgust. Since he has always lived apart from the idolatry of physical pleasure, he is shocked by the immorality of many of the people of the New World. However, it is this inner conflict he overcomes when he’s in the New World that helps him discover who he is. For instance, when John is tempted by some women in the World State, he instead chooses to run away from those kinds of situations. By learning to overcome the immorality of the world State, John realizes that he is very determined to be separate form the filth that many in the world state freely engages in. By his decision to overcome the many temptations of the world state has character and his morality, his morals and principles play an each greater role in his life. Therefore it is evident that adversity molds the character of a person and reveals their morals.
In addition, Lance Armstrong’s victory over cancer reveals how adversity has made a positive mark on his life and many others. Many times, even when he was going through the enervating effects of cancer, Armstrong chose to bike a certain distance everyday. Lance was determined that through his determination, he would overcome cancer and continue his career as one of the most celebrated cyclists in the world. Not only did Armstrong overcome cancer, but he grew in patience and courage. Overcoming the cancer in his body also helped him realize that life is worth fighting for and through perseverance and passion, many dreams can be accomplished. Without persistence and patience Armstrong probably wouldn’t be alive right now; adversity helped form a foundation of character in his life. Therefore it is also evident that through adversity, patience is developed and molds a stronger person.
It is evident that without adversity, people cannot grow in character. Adversity forms in people what other things cannot: endurance.
