TOPIC: Are we free to make our own choices in life, or are our decisions always limited by the rules of society?

In today's world there are hundreds of factors that contribute to shaping a person's actions. They can affect one's views and beliefs but at the end of the day, one will always have the freedom to make their own choices. People such as Charles Darwin and Rosa Parks are demonstrations of this.

Charles Darwin was born and raised in a heavily religious country and family. He was taught religion daily at school and at one point in his life was enrolled to study for the clergy. Such influences definitely shaped the mindset of Darwin, but it did not limit him indefinitely. At the onset of the Voyage of the Beagle, Charles Darwin still had his faith. At the the end of it, after learning more about the Earth, he began to reject the Bible. For Darwin, the rules of society could not stop him from making his own decisions about his own beliefs.

For others, rules society places on people can be less lenient. In 1955 an African-American woman named Rosa Parks boarded a bus and committed an act many in that time would find mind-boggling. When another white man requested she give him her seat, she refused. Even under such enormous social pressure those experienced during the period of racism and racial inequality, Rosa parks demonstrated that nothing in the world can restrict one from making their own decisions.

In conclusion, while many factors in society can influence a person, the final say remains in his or her hands. We are always free to make our own choices.
