The prompt: Is conscience a more powerful motivator than money, fame or power?

Without question, conscience is the most powerful motivator, more powerful than money, fame or power. Several examples from literature and history show that conscience is a powerful motivator for succeeding.

In the novel 1984, by George Orwell, Winston is not driven by money, fame or power. He is driven by his conscience. He knows what is right and what is wrong. In the novel, the Party controls all people in Oceania, even their thoughts. Winstons inner voice tells him that this is bad, and therefore he joins a secret organization and rebels against the Party. In the end he doesnt succeed with his plans and he, too, becomes a slave to the Party, but this doesnt take away the fact that he was motivated by his conscience.

Another example is that of Ernest Green. He was part of the Little Rock Nine, a group of African-American people, who, in 1957, were the first black people to join a white high school. In 1958, a year later, Ernest Green graduated from Little Rock High School. Just like Winston in 1984, he wasnt motivated by money, fame or power; he was motivated by his conscience. He knew it wasnt right for people to be divided; he knew it was right to join the originally white high school. Because of his conscience, he attended this high school and accomplished his goal.

Finally, another example is that of Galileo Galilei. In 1610, he was the first to claim that the world goes around the sun, and not the other way around. At first, the church didnt agree with him and didnt allow him to publish his findings. He wasnt after power or money though, and his conscience told him to publish it anyway. He did this, because it was the right thing to do; now we all know the truth about the way the universe works.

Taking into consideration George Orwells 1984, Ernest Green and Galilei, one can, indeed, see that conscience is a much more powerful motivator than money, fame or power and maybe even the most powerful tool in accomplishing your goals.
