Grade my SAT essay out of 12 :)

What is your view of the claim that the opinion of the majority is not always right?

Although the will of the majority usually wins over the will of the minority, that doesn’t mean that the majority is always right. In some cases, the majority rule is wrong but they are still considered right because they have more power than the minority. It is only when the minority group of individual fights back and proves they are right that the majority rule is finally considered wrong. Examples of people who have proved the majority rule to be wrong are Shawn Spencer from Psych and African-American Civil Rights activist, Martin Luther King Jr.

Shawn Spencer pretends to be a psychic so that the Santa Barbara Police Department will let him work on their cases. Each time Spencer tries to solve a crime, Detective O’Hara, Detective Lassiter, and Chief Vick have doubts about his psychic abilities and often try to solve the case without him. Then Spencer works hard to prove that they are solving the case wrong and they have the wrong suspect(s). So every time, Shawn proves them wrong by using his uncanny powers of observation and wraps up the case. The only reason Chief Vick does not respect Spencer as much as she respects the detectives is because he doesn’t have as much education as they do. This shows that the majority rule is sometimes considered right because they have more power. But when Spencer fights back by solving the case himself, he shows that the detectives are wrong about him and about who the murderer is. So the opinion of the majority is not always right because the minority is able to prove them wrong and prove themselves right.

Martin Luther King Jr. was going against the whole country when he said that it was feasible to make white people and black people have equal rights. At first, the majority of the U.S. citizens did not support him. They thought that racial integration was impossible because the two races were just too different. But the minister proved them all wrong. He led protests, boycotts, and gave powerful speeches about equality. Eventually, the majority acknowledged that they were wrong about integration being impossible and started supporting the activist. He gained more and more followers until the government finally payed attention to the protests and ended segregation. This would not have happened if King did not prove that the majority of people who assumed racial integration was impossible were wrong. So the opinion of the majority is not always right, especially when someone shows that they could be wrong.

The opinion of the majority is usually right, but not always right. Shawn Spencer proves the detectives to be wrong when solving crimes and Martin Luther King Jr. shows the majority that integration of whites and blacks is possible in America. So when someone fights back against the majority rule, they turn out to be right while the majority is wrong.

So what do you guys think? What could I improve on?

I’m interpreting that the prompt is a yes/no question because of SAT style essays: is opinion the majority always right? Also, assuming you wrote it in 25 minutes, you would probably get a 11-12
