‘The harder the conflict, the more glorious the triumph.what we obtain too cheap we esteem too lightly’
Do we most value the things that are difficult to attain?
How much we value something is directly related to how much we have given up to obtain it.Likewise, those who have overcome great adversity in life can relate to Thomas Paine’s quote,‘the harder the conflict, the more glorious the triumph.’
As shown by the life experiences of Frederick Douglass, the African-American social reformer. He had suffered misfortunes and adversities from an early age. However,he was ardent in his fight and urge for freedom. He was rejected basic education and secretly taught himself to read and write. He was also beaten till the age of sixteen which nearly broke him psychologically. Finally,at the age of twenty after many unsuccessful attempts and hardships he escaped from Maryland to New York City.He traveled through various states in this journey to freedom. When sharing his feelings of being free he explained the he lived more in a day than in a year of his slave life, and that words can but tamely describe that time of joyous excitement.Beset by problems on every step,Douglass did not succumb to the torment of slavery.Hence,he valued his freedom to a great extent.
In the contemporary times,Oprah Winfrey,am American media proprietor and talk show host, has also manifested this.
Born in Mississippi into poverty to a single teenage mother, she has suffered considerable distress during her childhood because of which she ran away from home at the age of thirteen.Adroitly maneuvering through those difficult times she became one of the best orator and the first black female news anchor on television.Today known as ‘The Queen Of All Media’ and the most influential women in the world. She stated,‘Where there is no struggle, there is no strength.’ Thus, she wouldn’t cherish her current position if it wasn’t for her experiences.
Humans are often made out to be more complex creatures than they really are,In reality, like the lion roars with arrogance after catching its prey, humans too take pride in what they have worked hard to obtain.Around us the notion of prize is common, the culmination of all of one’s efforts. In human eyes that is the only meaning of value.
