So, in grade nine, as most of you know [at least Ontario students], you have a choice of two electives, tech or business. I chose tech because it was outside of my comfort zone, and I wanted to learn something, as opposed to business, which was essentially a course on how to use Microsoft Office. Anyway, I had a really bad teacher, and my final mark was in the LOW eighties for tech. My other marks were low-to mid nineties.....will that low eighties mark have a negative impact on my admissions chance to elite US schools? Thanks.

It be easier to say if you converted your marks to a 4.0 scale gpa and gave that. Low 80s= B-, mid/low 90s= A/A- (there’s a big difference if you have a lot in your gpa).

If you have a 3.8+ then that’s not too harmful. Below a 3.5 and your chances are much less. Obviously the higher the gpa the better, so its worse than having a 4.0. That being said, plenty of people get into elite US schools without 4.0s. How are your ECs? Test scores? Recs? These will help not only override an imperfect gpa, but also help as hooks/tipping factors.

Oh, I’m a little confused…In Canada, low eighties is an A-, whereas nineties is an A+.

I couldn’t help you there. In the US low 90s is an A-, low 80s is B-.

94-100 = A
90-93.9 = A-
87-89 = B+
85-87.9 = B
80-84.9 = B-

This is roughly what it is. Varies school to school and I’ve never gotten a B/B- so I’m not too sure about the exact percents, but it’s close.

You’d have to ask a counselor or something what the conversion is.

You’re only in grade 9 so just do your best. I think the ontario system goes something like
80-100 = 4
70-79 = 3
60-69 = 2
50-59 = 1

i’m canadian ; a 90 above is an A+
a low 80 qualifies you as an A-
it shouldn’t hurt you too bad as long as you have an upward trend

My other marks were, math-91, geography-95, english-98
