grade point average

My school for some reason decided to get rid of the weighted gpa. So now if I take an honors course and get a B is goes onto my gpa like that. I was wondering if it would be better to take standard classes and get A's, or it it would be better to take honors and AP courses chancing a few B's each year.

Question What is better: getting an A is Regular English or a B in Honors English.

Answer Getting an A in Honors English.

The academy wants to see that you are taking the most rigorous course load that is available at your school. If you get all A's in truckers courses, the admissions board won't be impressed.

You may want to ask USNA admissions this question. I don't know about USNA, but USMA would say they would rather have a few B's in advanced courses, than straight A's in regular courses. They want to know that you are willing to challenge yourself. Of course, as GreatAmerican has said straight A's in honors/AP courses would be the ideal (but not always possible)...
Good luck!

What they^^ said. Exactly.

what about if my gpa is 3.575, but that puts me in the top 10% of my class?

sorry not 3.575, it's 3.675

The Admissions Board doesn't consider GPA. They are only interested in your class rank when they assign points.

How does the point system work? Can extra sports or SATS make up for poor class rank

Well if they are just interested in class rank and not GPA thats gunna suck for me. I had a 4.0 last semester and i was probably still about 78/180. I have a good GPA but my class rank stinks because the system at our school is messed up.

Is the 4.0 on a weighted or unweighted scale?

Question: I have over a 4.0 GPA, but I'm not even in the top 10% of my class. My school is a "magnet" school, and accepts people based on academics. Our courses are automatically all honors. There's only 120 kids in my grade, and the top 30 have over a 4.0 GPA. While my school sends out pamphlets to colleges explaining that the person ranked 30th and the person ranked 10th are only seperated by 10ths of a point... I can't imagine that they will actually care. I don't really know what my question is :p but what I'm trying to say is that I'm worried about my rank...

^^^ My mid had the same problem, small academic private 92 kids in class, but add to it that his school did not rank although in the school profile you could determine your approx decile. He was not in the top 10% but was in the top 20%, GPA from number 1 to my son was only seperated by 0.18. ( Validictorian was the only "ranked" student ) The school also sent out the profile with all transcripts. It did not seem to effect any of his college applications and was quite sucessful in his admits - including LOA to USNA. IMO I do not think you should worry... especially if your school is sending the profile. Question - what about AP's? My son was only one of three in his class that took over 10 AP's so the strength of the transcript did matter.

In some degree, the BGO can be useful in this area. Communicate w/ the BGO what you are saying here, e.g. that school does not rank AP classes differently or that 18/100 of a point separates you from Valedictorian.
BGO can add comments that clarifies these circumstances. The whole-person concept then becomes more significant when you are compared with others from your district.

Does anyone know how to determine what district you are in?

Based on your Representative.
