Grade Preference

Hi all,

So I have read that many universities stated that in college minimum grade of “B” is required to be competitive (especially for major required courses like Math, Phys, etc. for example).
If I have "A"s and “A-” for almost every of my courses, but a single “C” for one Calculus course (due to my fatal mistake on the final), does it mean I have way lower chance to be accepted?
I’m also wondering if that also makes me less competitive than other applicants with overall B grades.
My overall GPA is still 3.75 right now.

My GPA is about 3.7, and I’ve only gotten A’s and B’s. The lowest grade I got was a B- but it was in a composition class, not relevant to my major. So I guess I’m one of the “other applicants” you’re talking about.
I don’t have a terrible amount of B’s, but I do have a few. I would think that if you have all A’s and one C it should put you in a similar place…
One thing though, are you majoring in something like math or physics? Most schools seem like they don’t transfer over credit for courses where you earned lower than a B, so you would probably have to retake it if it’s required. Not a big deal if it’s not a major course, but somewhat of a setback if it is, unless they let you take a placement exam.

@eyo777‌ I’m majoring in Computer Science. Math is somewhat essential for the major though, so I’m very concerned about this issue. I hope that my other A’s could “cover up” that one C. I just want know if the admissions officers prefer a more stable A to B- rather than bunch of A’s and one C…

I don’t think anyone can give you a conclusive yes or no answer to this question. They aren’t all going to evaluate it the same way. My guess is that it’ll put you in roughly the same spot as the steady A, B- group.
