I have recently completed my junior year in high school. However, during the middle of the year, my life got complicated due to my parents divorcing and one of my friends passing away, and it really messed up my semester one grades, which are as follows:

AP ECON: B+, APUSH: A, APBIO:B, APPHYSICS:B-, and BCCALC: C

However, this is extremely abnormal as I have been getting straight A's since freshman year. For second semester my grades were:

APECON: A, APUSH: A, APBIO: A-, APPHYSICS: A-, and BCCALC: A-

My final grdes:

APECON: A-, APUSH: A, APBIO: B+, APPHYSICS: B+, and BCCALC: B-

all other classes were not AP classes, and I received an A.
Im really angry because I've worked hard for the last 2 years in order to get good grades. In my opinion, I have pretty good extracurriculars compared to those that I've seen on this website in the past, and just as I thought that I had a chance, my GPA dropped. My SAT is a 2350, and I have an 800 for both Biology E and M as well as MATHII, which I am hoping will maybe help compensate for the low grades. Will this one semester of bad grades destroy my chances of being accepted into an ivy league or ivy-level college? My counselor is one of the few people that know about this, and she is willing to write me a recommendation letter explaining my situation. My BCCALC teacher also knows that I am a hard worker, and is very close to me. I can't help but feeling regret that I messed up so badly at the last possible moment. I know that the recommendation won't completely compensate for the damage, so how much will it effect my chances?

“will maybe help compensate for the low grades.”

Ummmm. What low grades are you talking about? Without breaking out my calculator your cumulative GPA looks to be about a 3.9 right? And you have a 2350SATand two 800 subj test in your back pocket.

And you’re stressing? Really? Don’t voice what you wrote publicly or someone nearby will dope slap you.

I see where the OP is coming from, since I’m in a similar situation. Junior year is the most important year and the one that colleges look at the most, and even though his GPA is fine (higher than mine) the OP has below As for most of his AP classes, which shows a downward trend from his other years. For me though, I just stopped caring. There is nothing you can do about your grade, so just focus on doing well first semester next year and have a good summer.

Junior year is the most important year, and getting Bs in APs is not good, it is a downward trend. OP could get his GC to write in the LOR of his extraneous situation. OP could also excel senior fall semester to show he is capable of college level courses. I would not apply ED/EA so he could get another semester in before adcoms make their decisions.

Bump? I’m really worried about my C for the first semester in BC calc and all my Bs in my AP classes. How much do you guys think that retaking those classes at my local community college would help?
