Grade type??? (Adding classes)

Can someone explain to me the reasoning behind allowing students to select between pick, normal and pass/fail as the grade type for a course? Do most students just select normal for all the courses they take?

Pass/fail courses do not satisfy any requirements. I think that option mostly exists for if you want to take a class because it is interesting but are afraid of the extra course load it would put on you. ie you are a Mechanical Engineer who is really interested in a linguistics course but you already have a heavy schedule and don’t want to worry so much about your grade in that class.

Sometimes pass fail is an option for students who just want to take a class just for kicks (wouldn’t count towards a major or a requirement). The student may already have a busy schedule in front of them and does not want to worry about giving 100% in a class. There are other reasons for pass/fail too, but students almost always select “normal” (and many times are required to).

Pass/fail courses can satisfy the language requirement of Wharton…

That shocks me. Poor form, Wharton.
