Graded essay?

MHC requires that applicants send a 3-5 page graded analytical paper from junior or senior year. With that said, I have a paper that is actually 6 pages long and the other is 7. I really want to send them, so should I send one even though it is a page or two longer than the 3-5 page requirement? Thanks!

reduce font?

You cannot “reduce the font” because MoHo wants the teacher’s (handwritten) comments in addition to your eloquent prose. Just find another paper. Something uplifting, possibly on a subject that the reader might recognize and easily understand so that the reader can easily focus on what you wrote and how you wrote it.

Ok but maybe you could send the paper (with the different font) and scan teacher’s comments of the version s/he corrected?

I sent a 6-page paper and still got accepted. Maybe one or two pages won’t get you rejected as long as your paper shows your intellectual abilities, so don’t worry. Good luck to you all!

How did you send it in? PDF or snail mail. If PDF, did you attach it to the supplement somehow?

no they didn’t allow applicants to submit graded papers online, so you will have to send it in via snail mail.

Thanks! Not to be too obsessive about this, but did you put an identifier on it other than name and address, e.g., the common app number? Does it go with a note saying, “enclosed please find my graded paper”

I’m considering applying to MHC, and was wondering if they minded that my AP Lit teacher rarely comments on our papers? For the paper I am considering, he only wrote “Excellent writing” on the last page, and circled my grade on the rubric.

Too bad my AP Lang. teacher didn’t hand back the final last year - I was very proud of that one. She loved to comment all over our papers. =)

You know, I don’t think they really care about what the comments say. After all, it’s not the teacher who is applying. I think they probably ask for the graded paper to make sure that you are giving them a real piece of classwork–something you actually handed in and didn’t revise it later.

@qialah: I only put my name, my birthday, that’s all. I sent this graded paper along with other application materials, so you don’t have to say “enclosed” or anything. I guess the staff will sort the papers out once they reach MHC.

My teacher’s comments are nothing specific, mine just goes “excellent, good structure, blah blah blah”. You guys should not worry too much about it  Qialah I agree with you that the content of the paper is what that counts, not the comments.

Hey Qialah do you apply ED2? Hope to hear good news from you soon!

You know, depending on your relationship with your teacher, you could always shrink the font/margins and re-print the paper so it falls within the guidelines. Then, take the original and re-printed papers with you and explain the situation to your teacher. S/he might be happy to re-write the comments on this newer paper.

Nene: It’s my daughter who is applying. She’s not doing ED II. I hope she gets good news too!

My D sent the paper by FedEx, along with an arts supplement and a CD. My D stuck a large pink post-it on the paper describing what the writing assignment was. She wrote her LAST NAME, First Name, Middle Name and birth date on all papers.

As soon as she got an ISIS number/password, the paper, Arts Supp. and CD, along with the common app. papers were immediately registered as having been received. It took longer for the teacher recommendations to make it into the ISIS registration account.

hey girls are you sure we can’t send the essay via e-mail coz that’s what i did, i.e. i’ve scanned it and sent it via email.
the thing is im appliyng ED 2 and it would take at least 2 weeks for the essay to get from europe to america via snail mail. what should i do now?
maybe i should just wait for the admission office to contact me?

Are you guys sending the original paper or photocopies? I have 2 colleges asking for graded papers and I’m wondering if I can send copies of the same paper to both of the colleges…

My ED1 accepted D sent a photocopy of her essay to MoHo.

By the way, FedEx operates in Europe too. Considering the cost of tuition, it’s woth the investment. And you can track the delivery process too, unlike for snail mail.

For us, MoHo was slow in responding to e-mail. They may have been a bit busy at the time.

I retyped my graded paper and had my teacher comment on a separate paper. Thankfully I only applied to one college, otherwise I would have had to ask her to comment it again.

I just color-copied my essay. It’s a tad on the short side (2 pages), but I got a 99 on it, so why not? =) I’m probably going to mail it out tomorrow, along with my art supplement.

on a seperate sheet of paper I typed out what the assignment for the paper was and put all my personal information (name and birthday) on that sheet as well and stapled it to my essay since I sent it snail mail
